This project is a pretty good example of my approach to personal work, which goes as follows:
1) Come up with a dumb idea - What if snails had turrets?
2) Try and forget how dumb the idea is - But really, what if they had turrets??
3) Approach the dumb idea as if it was a good idea - Look, here’s a snail with a turret.
4) (Bonus) Come up with a pun name for the project… (This one’s a tie between “SnailGun” and “ShellShock”)
Big fan of the process. It might just be me, but I find it a lot easier to commit to a piece of personal work that I’m not also taking super seriously. Personal work is supposed to be fun after all 🙂.
This was also one of the first projects where I really got stuck into Blender and Grease Pencil. It was a bit of a turning point for me, and now I’m a lot more comfortable with Blender, and use it all the time. This silly snail helped me get there.
PS. Realising that a snail’s lower tentacle things could double as a colonel-esque moustache remains one of my proudest moments as an artist. Honestly not sure I’m gonna top it…
